House in a bubble
We just bought a house. I can hardly fathom that I am allowed to be a homeowner. But for those of you who do not live in Florida, you may not understand what a monumental occasion this really is, especially if you are a first time homeowner. Aside from maybe CA, FL has the most rediculous housing bubble ever. Investors from other parts of the country will buy homes over the internet, sight unseen, and flip them 3 months later for a profit of $10,000 or more. And this is no flipping like they do on the TLC show. These investors usually do not make changes on the home at all, they just buy and sell, buy and sell. Which makes it nearly impossible for a regular person to find quality affordable housing. We quickly learned that in our pricepoint, which in the rest of the country would buy us a decent home, we had 2 options. Either the ghetto, or a townhome. Now a townhome is awesome, but because of the bubble, the communities have waiting lists sometimes in upwards of 300 people, so by the time you can get one, the price has risen to unaffordable. Well, one day we stumbled on a builder we had never heard of. They were about to release 12 townhomes in our price range. The townhomes were also bigger than anything else we had looked at thus far. Well of course, we eyed up the saleslady and said "how do we get on the list". She informed us that there was no list. You just had to be one of the first lucky 12 at the door to the sales office at 10 am the day of the release. We took this as a godsend. Finally, we had some degree of control. Half joking we tossed back and forth the idea of maybe camping out overnight to insure that we would be one of the lucky 12. So the Friday night before, we drove down there, folding chairs in tow, just to be sure that no one WAS really camping out. In the words of an old friend "Shuck my corn and call me Gary..." they were lined up at the door. We stumbled out of the car blinking. We were greeted by a man who handed us number 9 and said "you made it." I,being 9 months pregnant, waited for a while and then went home to my air conditioned apartment to rest while my dear husband and sister-in-law braved the humidity and bugs to keep our place in line all night. Bless them. At about 11 am the next day we officially secured our place inside the bubble. And I just heard on the news that due to all the hurricanes the bubble will probably burst. Great.
Also, this almost made me pee my pants. Hope you like it too.
